SEXUALLY STIGMATIZED COMMUNITIES
Workshops and Seminars
By CHUCK STEWART, Ph.D.
General Workshop Information
Many colleges, universities, public utilities, public schools, and private businesses are interested in conducting in-service training for their personnel in the area of sexual orientation. The goals of the training include:
Strategies for overcoming homophobia and heterosexist behavior in the organization and with customers will be developed by students and administrators in support of identifying appropriate behaviors.
Chuck Stewart would like to share his expertise on sexual orientation with your personnel. His experiences and resource materials will be of value to those interested in providing a supportive work environment for all employees and an environment that is free of discrimination against persons of differing sexual orientations.
The standard 4-hour training workshop covers self-awareness, research on sexual orientation to overcome stereotypes, personalizing the lesbian and gay experience, a review of the legal status of sexual orientation, exploration of points-of-contact, and developing strategies for overcoming heterosexism and homophobia. Shorter 2- and 1-hour workshops are also available, and ones that focus on more specialized topics such as adolescents, supervisors, lesbians, college classes on sexuality and gender, legal and law enforcement, religion, parents, multicultural, prejudice, and others.
Chuck Stewart wrote the Gay and Lesbian Cultural Awareness Training curriculum and teaching package for use in the Los Angeles Police Academy, is a consultant with the California Commission on Police Officers Standards and Training (POST), and wrote the award winning book Sexually Stigmatized Communities- Reducing Heterosexism and Homophobia: An Awareness Training Manual (1999, SAGE Publications, Inc.).
Let Chuck Stewart work with you to develop workshops that meet the specific needs of your business besides informing your employees about anti-discrimination laws, workplace conduct, and appropriate interpersonal behaviors with customers. The workshops are interactive with scenario-based problem solving exercises and measured to be effective.
Scheduling and Fees
Workshop Description: Besides group and individual activities, a multi-media approach is used to present information on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, and intersex people and their issues as a stigmatized community. The workshops are designed to inform participants to issues of sexual orientation and internalized homophobia and to interactively solve problems arising from heterosexism as applied to the organization's environment.
Number of Participants: Up to 30 persons in one session.
Participant Materials: The effectiveness of the workshop is significantly improved when a SSC Reader© is distributed to each participant. Portions of this 150-page resource will be customized to the needs of the contracting organization. Either a master can be provided to the contracting organization for their in-house duplication (with a $4.00 royalty charge per book) or copies can be obtained directly from Chuck Stewart at $15.00 per book.
Equipment Requirements: The organization needs to provide a meeting room of appropriate size, TV with VCR (VHS format), over-head projector with projector screen, PA system, and either easel board with paper (preferred) or chalk board or marker board. Hopefully, the organization will have an open lesbian and gay male member who are willing to participate in the Personal Stories portion of the training.
Fees:
The 3-4 hour workshop is the most used format and is effective at engaging students in problem solving activities. There will be two 2-hour meetings conducted with the organizers before the first workshop. At these meetings, the focus of the workshop will be decided, scenarios applicable to the contracting organization will be developed, duplication of the SSC Reader© will be arranged, and the open lesbian and gay organizational members participating in the Personal Stories portion of the training will be rehearsed.
